A woman in a white bra with implantsBreast implants can enhance the shape, size, and contour of your chest, and may be an appropriate solution for patients who have small or disproportionate breasts. At her Darien, CT, plastic surgery practice, Dr. Anya Kishinevsky offers saline, silicone, and Spectrum® adjustable breast implants, ultimately giving the patient control over their final appearance. During an initial breast augmentation consultation, Dr. Kishinevsky will discuss the various types of implants and what type may be right for you. She will also determine the proper size and shape based on your goals for treatment and your natural body type. With her attention to detail and clinical skill, you can enjoy beautiful final results.

Are You a Candidate for Breast Implants?

If you feel that your breasts are disproportionately small in comparison to the rest of your figure, or if you are seeking to restore your appearance following a mastectomy, you may be a candidate for implants. Implants can be an important part of many breast reconstruction procedures. Breast implants may also be appropriate if you have uneven breasts, or if your bust line has lost volume due to age.

To qualify for breast implants, you should be in good health. You should not receive implants if you have a skin condition or infection. Major health problems, such as cancer, an autoimmune disease, or a bleeding disorder, may also disqualify you from treatment. Dr. Kishinevsky will discuss your health history at your initial consultation.

Implant Shapes, Sizes, and Materials

When you choose to undergo breast augmentation, you will need to decide which type of implants you want. Dr. Kishinevsky offers three types of implants:

Saline implants
These implants have a silicone shell and they are filled with a saltwater solution. Saline implants are filled after placement, so Dr. Kishinevsky can place these implants using a smaller incision than would be required for silicone implants. You will know right away if the implant ruptures because the body will safely absorb the saline solution.
Silicone implants
Silicone implants also have a silicone shell, but they are filled with a gel made of the same material. They typically feel more natural than saline implants, especially if you have a naturally small frame. Although they do require longer incisions, Dr. Kishinevsky can typically hide the resulting scars in the folds of your breasts.
Spectrum® adjustable implants:
These adjustable implants are also filled with a saline solution, but unlike traditional saline implants, can be adjusted post-operatively. This allows Dr. Kishinevsky to personalize the size of your bust to complement a changing figure, or to provide a more voluptuous look.
Breast implants pose negligible risks, thanks to Dr. Kishinevsky’s skill and recent developments in implant technology.

In addition to the material, you will also need to choose the appropriate size and shape for your implants. While all three types of implants come in a round shape, silicone implants are also available in a teardrop shape, giving the added benefit of a more natural-looking breast shape. Ultimately, when choosing the type and shape of your implants, you should consider your natural frame, your desired treatment outcome, and your lifestyle. You will be able to examine the various sizes and even try on mockups beforehand, allowing you to make a more informed decision.

Risks and Benefits of Breast Implants

Breast implants pose negligible risks, thanks to Dr. Kishinevsky’s skill and recent developments in implant technology. Of course, all medical procedures carry some risks. Implants could shift in your breast, giving you an uneven look. You could also develop capsular contracture, which happens when the capsule of tissue around the implant tightens. In turn, it will pull on the implant, and you could experience rippling, hardening of the breast, and discomfort. With any surgery, there is always some risk of infection, bleeding, and allergic reaction.

Fortunately, when you visit Dr. Kishinevsky, you are highly unlikely to experience these side effects. She was educated at some of the finest medical institutions in the country and regularly participates in continuing education. Furthermore, she operates out of her own private surgical facility, allowing her to more closely monitor her patients' safety and comfort. Finally, many female patients find that they are more comfortable having a female plastic surgeon perform sensitive plastic surgery procedures.
