What Is a Lip Lift?

A lip lift, also known as lip shortening surgery or the subnasal "bullhorn" lip lift, is a cosmetic procedure that can:

  • Reduce the distance between your nose and your upper lip
  • Augment the size of your upper lip, creating a more youthful appearance
  • Address any asymmetry in your lips

When performed by a board-certified plastic surgeon like Dr. Kishinevsky, a lip lift can provide a subtle, natural-looking enhancement to your facial features.

Lip Lift: Step-by-Step

Dr. Kishinevsky performs lip lift procedures in-house at our office in Norwalk. A lip lift is an outpatient procedure that can be completed in a few steps:

Typically, this plastic surgery only requires local anesthesia. We will thoroughly numb the treatment area so you won't feel any discomfort during the procedure.

Dr. Kishinevsky will make an incision directly under your nose. Normally, the incision is in the shape of a bullhorn, which gives the procedure its popular name.

Skin Removal

Next, Dr. Kishinevsky will remove a small amount of skin between your lip and your nose. The amount of skin removed will be determined by your cosmetic goals.

Finally, Dr. Kishinevsky will close the incision by lifting the skin above your upper lip to the skin below your nose. As a result, your upper lip will be slightly folded up, producing fuller-looking lips.

Lip Lift vs. Fillers

If you want fuller lips, a surgical lip lift is not your only option. Patients from Norwalk and Bridgeport can also choose injectable fillers at our practice. Here are some similarities and differences to consider when you are deciding between the two approaches:

Lip Lift Fillers
Method A lip lift is a form of plastic surgery that involves scalpels and sutures. Fillers are injected directly into the lips using a syringe.
Results Lip lift surgery permanently alters your lips so that they appear fuller and more youthful. Fillers add volume to your lips, but the results fade over time. To maintain your results, you will require additional injections in the future.
Recovery There will be some soreness and swelling that should subside after a few weeks. You will need to limit your facial movement during the recovery period so you don't open the incision. Different patients react differently, but swelling and discomfort usually only last a few days. You will not have to worry about damaging any incisions.

When you meet with our plastic surgeon for a consultation, she will determine whether an upper lip lift or an injectable is more appropriate for your goals.
