A Tummy Tuck Can Create a Slimmer, More Toned Figure
Many patients have stubborn pockets of fat on their abdominal area that they cannot slim down despite rigorous diet and exercise. If you are self-conscious about sagging skin and excess fat, you may want to consider an abdominoplasty, commonly known as a tummy tuck. This procedure can tighten and tone your abdominal area for a slimmer more toned appearance.
Dr. Anya Kishinevsky is a board-certified plastic surgeon who has undergone extensive training to provide patients with the best possible surgical care. She can personalize your treatment at her Fairfield and Norwalk, CT, surgical centers to achieve results that enhance your figure. We also offer non-surgical sculpting with the advanced truSculpt® system.
What is a Tummy Tuck?
An abdominoplasty is a surgical procedure designed to flatten and tone the midsection by tightening sagging abdominal muscles and removing excess fat and skin.
Benefits of Abdominoplasty
Excess skin that has lost its elasticity can easily be removed during a tummy tuck. The number of stretch marks in the abdominal area can also be dramatically reduced or completely eliminated.
Types of Abdominoplasty
Different tummy tuck techniques can be performed depending on the amount of tissue to be removed:
- Mini Tummy Tuck
- Patients who wish to eliminate only small amounts of excess skin and fat beneath the bellybutton can benefit from a mini tummy tuck or an endoscopic tummy tuck, both of which are minimally invasive procedures.
- Traditional Tummy Tuck
- Patients with a greater amount of excess tissue can benefit from traditional abdominoplasty, circumferential tummy tuck, or an extended tummy tuck.
During your consultation, Dr. Kishinevsky will perform an in-depth evaluation and discuss your goals with you to make the best treatment recommendation for your needs. She provides a full spectrum of body contouring surgeries to help you achieve the best possible results.
Is a Tummy Tuck Right for Me?
From individuals who are battling stubborn areas of abdominal fat to women who are seeking a slimmer figure following pregnancy, many patients are unhappy with their waistlines and would like to have a more toned and contoured midsection.
Important Candidacy Considerations
However, it is important to be aware that tummy tuck surgery is not meant to help you lose weight. It specifically addresses loose, stretched skin and tissues. Additionally, if you are considering an abdominoplasty, you should:
- Have achieved your goal weight or close to it
- Be dedicated to maintaining a healthy weight
- Not be planning to have children in the future
- Be in good overall health
If you are a candidate for tummy tuck surgery, Dr. Kishinevsky can provide careful, artful surgical care to help you achieve a more flattering figure.
The Tummy Tuck Procedure
Before your treatment, you will be provided with anesthesia. Once you are fully sedated, Dr. Kishinevsky will carefully create incisions at the targeted area of the midsection to minimize scarring. The first incision will be made horizontally between the hip bones.
Some types of abdominoplasty procedures, such as a traditional tummy tuck, circumferential tummy tuck, and extended tummy tuck, require repositioning of the navel to match the new body shape. In these cases, another incision is created around the navel in order to shift its position.
The doctor will then remove excess skin and fat from the area. If your stomach muscles have become separated, she will also tighten and repair them. Finally, Dr. Kishinevsky will skillfully suture the incisions closed. The result is a more-toned midsection and a narrower waistline.
Tummy Tuck Recovery
After your procedure, you will be provided with a compression bandage to hold the incisions closed while you heal. In many cases, patients are able to return to sedentary work after about two weeks and all other normal activities after three to four weeks.
However, it is typically recommended that patients wait until about eight weeks have passed to begin strenuous exercise. It is important that you do not engage in any intensive activities until Dr. Kishinevsky has given you approval as you may cause yourself serious harm.
To help promote proper healing, you will need to closely follow recovery instructions, including:
- Avoid smoking and consuming alcohol
- Eat a balanced diet
- Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids
- Avoid especially salty foods
You can always contact our office with any questions or concerns during your recovery.
Follow-up care is essential after any surgical procedure to monitor your recovery and ensure complications do not arise. Over the next year, several visits will be necessary, including one within the first week after surgery. Depending on your progress, Dr. Kishinevksy will schedule several periodic appointments for you.
While it can take up to a year for your results to become fully apparent, you will see a substantial improvement in your figure immediately after surgery. With fully customized care, many of our patients have been exceptionally pleased with the flatter and more toned results from abdominoplasty surgery. Tummy tuck results are usually long-term as long as you take precautions to maintain your figure.
Maintaining Your Results
It is important to remember that a tummy tuck is neither a weight loss procedure nor a substitute for a healthy lifestyle. It also takes a lot of effort to maintain the results. With a proper diet and fitness routine, though, the results of your abdominoplasty can last for many years.
Exercise is especially crucial for maintaining the new figure following abdominoplasty. Not only can exercise prevent further weight gain, but light routines can help the patient heal faster and tone the abdominal area for the best results.
